The Butter Dell Cafe....Greasy Spoon....

Greasy spoons are generally defined as small, cheap, diners or restaurants that specialize in serving fried or grilled foods such as eggs, bacon, and burgers. These "greasy spoons" are often located off the beaten path and offer food that the working man can afford.

The Butter Dell Cafe is definitely a greasy spoon. If you haven't been or heard of the Butter Dell, it is located in a small building in the parking lot of the Blue Ridge Inns on Douglas street (right next to the KFC). There is approximately 8 tables. The decor is, typical of a greasy spoon, outdated and saturated with cheesy pictures and plastic plants. However, this is just what I look for in a greasy spoon, anything else and they wouldn't be greasy.

Every once in a while the family and I will go to the Butter Dell for a quick, cheap Sunday breakfast. Out of the very few "greasy spoons" that I have tried or found in Victoria, the Butter Dell is my favorite so far... Last weekend my fiance and I went to the Butter Dell after morning walk around Thetis lake. The nice thing about the Butter Dell is that you generally never have to wait for a table and the service is extremely fast, sometimes I wonder if it is too fast.....? We had our coffee within a minute of being seated and our food within 5 minutes of our order being taken.

I generally haven't had any bad experiences there; however, this time my fiance found quite a few pieces of egg shells in her scrambled eggs. I guess if there is any consolation to egg shells in your eggs it is that you know they weren't out of a carton. For the most part our meals were just what we expected, good old greasy breakfast, really, what else would you expect when you go to a greasy spoon? My only other comment would be to stay away from the sausages, I didn't really care for them.

Anyways, if you haven't been to the Butter Dell, it might just be worth a try. Our bill for the two of us came to just under $20 and we were done in under 30 minutes.
